The Lamas de Abade school’s language lab is a great hit.
The Lamas de Abade public school in Santiago de Compostela set up a language lab some three years ago. The lab features the latest Roycan technology, using the firm’s EasyLab system to adapt the school’s computing classroom for language teaching. The joint project by the Galician Regional Government’s Education Department and the school is yielding excellent results.
As stated in the regional newspaper La Voz de Galicia, the school’s results have soared above the average. In part this is because of the benefits conferred on teachers and students by Optimas Technology®.
The newspaper article also notes: “In the final English test set by the Department of Education to evaluate students in their last year of Primary School, the school’s students obtained an average mark of 8.9. This is well above the average of 6.5 for Galician primary schools as a whole".
Just three years on, the school’s initiative is yielding splendid results. The school’s stellar performance has sparked the interest of education experts in Galicia and abroad, encouraging them to set up language labs in their own institutions.
Fourteen groups use the lab 25 hours a week. The center has two specialist teachers to help students. In the lab, all communication between teachers and students is in English. The EasyLab activities are highly motivating and cater to student diversity.
Although the center had a tight budget, EasyLab made it possible to turn the school’s computing classroom into a fully-equipped Digital Language Lab at a very reasonable price while meeting all teachers’ and students’ needs.
In the words of the primary school’s Director, José Miguéns, "For the last three years, the lab can be used by all students from the first year. It marked a change in our approach to teaching English and we realized that it made students more motivated to learn. We are also very pleased with the dramatic improvement in results."
